Face is a sign – facies is a signal. Gauguin drew what then was a face and only later became a facies – a puzzle? – Not really! Artists see what clinicians did not, at least for centuries. Think of Down syndrome. The face is a facies (typical), but for 2000 years, clinicians paid no attention, artist did. Are clinicians blind? Not really! What they need is to open their eyes.
