THE UKRAINIAN TERATOLOGY INFORMATION SYSTEM (UTIS)
The Ukrainian Teratology Information System (UTIS) was initiated by OMNI-Net International Charitable Fund and MedWord LLC because our experience in Ukraine indicates that the vast majority of individuals seeking information concerning teratogens have limited grasp of English. Therefore, an Advisory Panel and Editor were appointed to establish an electronic Teratology Information System in Ukrainian (UTIS).
The core component of UTIS are factsheets (F). The initial scope of F concerns medications in Ukraine and gradually an introduction of F dedicated to other teratogenic risks. The contents of F are summaries adopted from established international sources, in particular from those published by OTIS (Organization of Teratology Information Specialists) and Reprotox (Reproductive Toxicology Center). An agreement with these organizations facilitated greatly the development of UTIS. Contents are updated tri-annually.
The results indicate that UTIS provides information to a nation-wide scope of health care providers. Following its inception in 2015 and a phase of annual rapid growth, the annual visitors increased from 3,527 during 2016 to 13,954, 26,252, and 48,039. The proportion of visitors residing away from large urban areas is gradually increasing from 44% to 53% during the first semesters of 2019 and 2020 respectively. The number of F units consulted increased by 27% from 40,105 to 50,979 during the semesters just cited. On this basis we consider that UTIS was needed and its implementation is successful. Furthermore, we recommend that similar implementations in local languages be developed elsewhere.
